Zlumov

The Rock-Breathing World of Hidden Wells

Light and warmth originate from the ambient rock rather than a distant star above the horizon. A lone world sits within this medium, holding about seventy million people in hollow tunnels.

Dusk reveals a second sky where foreign clouds drift across stars that do not belong to Zlumov. The western cliffs near Vyabrebo mark a hidden opening where air sometimes smells faintly of ozone; herders say it smells like burnt metal when storms pass overhead.

Dimension
INFINITENo edge has ever been reached by travelers who have walked or flown for years across the rock sea.
Medium
SOLID ROCKThe space is filled with solid rock and life keeps to the hollows and tunnels in it.
Population
70 MILLIONAbout seventy million people live here, split nearly evenly between Kryomod and Ruvuv.
The land of Zlumov
01

Medium

The dimension contains infinite solid rock that fills all space without a single star to illuminate it. A contagion of belief spreads among the poor while the established clergy attempts to halt its growth.

Fungal Networks
Entire hillsides act as single underground organisms under the soil while traditional plants vanish from view.
Machinery
Imported machines stall immediately unless rebuilt to function under Zlumov's unique environmental rules and physics.
Physics
Only machines built under this world's own physics run here while imported machinery stalls until rebuilt.
02

Breaks

A new faith spreads fast among the poor while the old one fights it with fire and stone walls.

from Song of the Ozone Wind, by Rabrul, chronicler

A specialized beast hunts humans with a preference that cannot be driven away by fear or force alone. Wells dry up in the deep earth and water sold by specific measures determines wealth for everyone.

Economy
Water is sold by the measure while wells are the richest property among all landowners.

Peoples

  1. One of the Kryomod
    01

    Kryomod

    Avian owl-like snowy-feathered crested
    Alignment
Neutral groups keep heat but trade food for water.
    Economy
They farm fungal networks and sell cured meats while importing rare metals.
    Governance
Elders from each clan meet quarterly to decide water distribution.
    People
Most wear feathers woven into tight cloaks that trap heat generated by the ambient rock beneath their feet.
    Looks
Snowy plumage covers avian, owl-like bodies marked by a feathered crest under simple wool tunics, with a heavy iron knife in hand.
  2. One of the Ruvuv
    02

    Ruvuv

    Wiry scaled bipeds
    Alignment
Selfish traders sell water measures yet hide their deep wells.
    Economy
They mine salt from the rock face and trade it for tools rebuilt under local physics.
    Governance
Merchants set prices for every barrel leaving the gates.
    People
Many carry heavy water skins strapped to broad backs while avoiding the western cliffs where the gate stands.
    Looks
Most are wiry with sand-coloured scales and a short snout in simple tunics, with an iron chisel slung at the side.
  3. One of the Dvekryok
    03

    Dvekryok

    Amphibian newt-like glossy green-skinned tailed
    Alignment
Benevolent healers tend wounded travelers while avoiding the hunting beast.
    Economy
They brew medicine from fungal spores for villages where belief's contagion spreads fast.
    Governance
Elders choose safe herbs before a plague killed most people.
    People
Few live near the electric cities while most stay in damp caves with feathery external gills for breathing air.
    Looks
Glossy green skin and a long tail with feathery external gills set them apart: amphibious and newt-like, dressed in waterproof cloaks and carrying glass vials.
  4. One of the Rezlye
    04

    Rezlye

    Stooped long-armed pale-skinned heavy-browed
    Alignment
Evil architects build stone-age villages ruled by eldest women.
    Economy
They carve tunnels through solid rock to house people while selling rent to others.
    Governance
A matriarch rules until death; a successor takes her seat.
    People
Some work underground in silence while others guard the wells that locals believe are connected to the wound in reality.
    Looks
Their stooped posture hides muscle beneath long arms while heavy brow ridges cast shadows over small dark eyes; they wear thick wool tunics and carry chisels.
  5. One of the Lagor
    05

    Lagor

Bipedal marsupials with a tall kangaroo build, a spiked tail
    Alignment
Neutral nomads herd fungal networks while avoiding the beast.
    Economy
They trade hides for water measures from electric cities while keeping young safe in deep hollows.
    Governance
Matriarchs choose camp by where rainwater pools most heavily now.
    People
Most travel alone while others form small groups to protect young from predators that hunt humans nearby.
    Looks
Lagor stand tall with kangaroo frames against rocky ledges while a single spiral horn curves above their brow; they wear thick leather hides.
04

Way Out

The gate stands hidden in the western cliffs where local shepherds say the air smells faintly of ozone. Unseen travelers occasionally stumble through a tear in the rock face and vanish without a trace; they are counted among the lost.

Belief
Locals believe the opening is a wound in reality that only allows passage during storms or eclipses.
