Doprell

A bounded field of stone spires under flickering light

The world spans eleven thousand nine hundred twenty-one kilometres across as a finite space that never grew larger. Standing electric charge arcs between anything left ungrounded while a swarm of one thousand three hundred seventy-five small moons drifts close enough to cross between.

Jagged stone spires rise vertically to support settlements built between their tops on bridges that span wide gaps. Air pressure inside the world rises and falls like a tide, causing pain in ears and joints for all inhabitants who live atop these peaks.

01

Shape and Medium

The land consists of jagged stone spires topped with settlements connected by bridges that span gaps between the peaks.

from Account Book of Pigment Prices, by Vaunegrur, factor

The space is filled with standing electric charge that arcs between anything left ungrounded while a swarm of moons drifts within the dimensional bounds. Light flickers faintly on a steady beat, and people count their days by the rhythm of this unstable glow.

Moons
A swarm of 1,375 small moons sits close enough for travelers to cross between without entering a hull.

Machinery and Power

Machines function only while an Ability Set tends them. Unattended devices cease to operate immediately upon neglect.

from Chronicle of the Broken Treaty, by Pitrox, historian

Current machines operate only while an Ability Set tends them; unattended devices cease to function when left alone. Wealth accumulates through the extraction of unique dyes and pigments found only within this specific environment.

Machines
Machines run only when an Ability Set tends them rather than running on stored power alone.
Power Source
Ambient power is faint: Ability Sets work and draw a little from the world to keep devices running.
Wealth
Wealth in this world comes from dyes and pigments found only here, which sell for high prices on the outer markets.

Rulers and Laws

Officials are chosen by lot from the adult population and serve one year before stepping down or being replaced by new lots. The Foclaum control the land and the key resource of fresh water, selling it high to outsiders who travel the border roads.

Conflict
The Menirt and Cefauct rearm along the eastern border because a treaty broken last year left both sides without water supplies.
Statutes
Officials chosen by lot may imprison anyone found carrying weapons out of the stone fields for up to one year.

    Economy
Most earn wealth mining rare dyes from stone crevices and selling them through Mestins' bridge markets.
    Governance
A lot-chosen elder council rules each district for one year.
    People
The stooped long-armed dark-skinned folk with patterned faces live atop the highest stone spires of Nalill and enforce departure fees strictly.
    Looks
Dark brown skin covers stooped, long-armed bodies marked by patterned facial markings under waterproof woven tunics, with a small glass vial of dye in hand.
  2. One of the Menirt

    Menirt

Long-limbed, brown skin, no outer ears
    Alignment
Some hoard water for selfish greed during dry seasons.
    Economy
They earn income by tending machines that pump fresh water from deep aquifers beneath stone fields.
    Governance
Long-limbed Menirt serve a rotating council yearly.
    People
The long-limbed brown-skinned folk without outer ears herd livestock in Vicaulaum where the flickering light guides their movements across bridges.
    Looks
They wear loose linen robes that flutter in the pressure tides, carrying water skins strapped tightly to their broad backs for transport.
  3. One of the Cidemens
    03

    Cidemens

    Insectoid, stick-insect-like
    Alignment
They serve as neutral guardians enforcing gate laws.

    Governance
Lot-chosen officials govern every sector for a single year.
    People
The insectoid stick-insect-like folk with pale grey chitin live in Lupart as refuges for native life brought through the gate and tend machines.
    Looks
Six limbs with folded raptorial forelimbs set them apart: insectoid, stick-insect-like, pale grey chitin from head to limb, dressed in tight sealsuits and carrying diagnostic probes.

The Way Out

The gate stands within a city that has grown around it. Locals speak its own language while enforcing its own laws. Visitors must present permits issued by the local authority to confirm their identity and standing within the region.

Search
Searches occur before departure to ensure no weapons leave the world, as slavers often work the roads leading away from the stone spires.
Authority
A holder of power decides who may pass. They ask for a fee paid in this world's money before any departure occurs.
